ArchiveRobert Carson Brown VisitRecord: Uniform: Robert Carson BrownDetailed Description The uniform of Colonel Robert Carson Brown was stolen from the Richland County Museum in the early 1970's. The items were then sold at an auction in Delaware County, Ohio and remained in private "collections" for decades. Presumably, these items were lost to history forever.
In 2008, thanks to the efforts of the Ohio in the Civil War Network, Brett Mitchell, Kent Dorr and Rich Eichinger of the Richland County Sheriff's department, the items were discovered in an online auction at Ebay.com. The Ebay seller was unaware of the items history in relation to the theft.
The determined group of preservationists secured the requisition of these historically important items for the state of Ohio and the citizens of Richland County. The grouping will again be on display, thanks to Senator Sherrod Brown, for all citizens to see.
The images in this listing as well as the following information were provided by the ebay seller.

"The dealer that originally bought this collection was Larry **** of ****. There is only one other person that had it after that and that is Brian **** (a close associate of Larry’s). In fact this grouping originally contained Cpt. Brown’s forage cap, but it was in pretty bad shape evidentially. Brian was offered a very good amount of money just for the cap (“three times what it was worth†according to Brian), by someone who restores and collects civil war headware, so he sold it separately.
Here is the letter written by Larry. I, Larry ****, attended an estate auction held near Delaware, Ohio in the late 1970s and purchased at that estate sale a nice grouping of material that was sold as being the effects of Capt. Robert C. Brown of the 64th Ohio Vol. Infantry. The grouping to the best of my memory consisted of his frock coat w/capt. Straps, maroon sash, eagle sword belt rig, forage cap, Model 1850 foot off. Sword, and 36 cal. Colt Navy revolver. All items appeared to be absolute originals and were each in quite nice condition. This is in my opinion a museum quality estate. ------ End correspondence  Discussion (1)
The item is currently on display for the citizens of Richland County Ohio courtesy of Robert Brown's descendant United States Senator Sherrod Brown.
